Balmoral Castle is the site of a 16th century square tower house, with a walled courtyard. In 1852, Balmoral was purchased for Queen Victoria by Prince Albert and they decided to build a new Castle, as the tower would be no longer adequate for the Royal Family. The Castle was completed in 1856 and the old building was then demolished, with a stone placed on the front lawn to mark the position of its front door. Balmoral Estates has been the favourite home to successive generations of the Royal Family since it was designed under the supervision of Prince Albert.
Balmoral Castle is located west of Crathie, off the B976. 48 miles west of Aberdeen, on the A93.
The site is the Scottish home of the royal family and the grounds and exhibitions are open daily, April to July 10:00-5:00pm, guided tours are available November to mid December, check website for details. Balmoral Estates offers weddings with accommodation and self-catering holiday cottages.
