Pipe Aston Castle
SO 462-721 Herefordshire England
Pipe Aston Castle is probably a low earthwork motte and bailey or an earth and timber ringwork and bailey fortress. Standing on a low spur with a stream to the north, the low flat-topped mound is mostly ploughed out to the south and east but its ditch remains to the north and west. The irregular western bailey is defended by the scarp of the northern stream and the remains of a wide ditch to the south. A probable siege-castle to Aston Tump, built during the Anarchy in the reign of King Stephen or its unfinished predecessor. There is also a possible bailey to the east and with the dense cover of trees, the castle is best viewed in winter. 4 miles south-west is Wigmore Castle.
Pipe Aston
Castle is located in the village centre, south of the road. 4 miles south-west
